Background

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the ginger family. It has a tuberoid rhizome. Plant stems can reach up to three meters high. The plant has large leaves, blooms in the autumn with a dense tangle. The multiplication of the turmeric plant is done by dividing the tuber.

The rhizome (resembling its relative - the ginger) is orange and wrapped in a brown shell.

As a spice

The spice produced from the root has a delicate taste and gives the food golden color. This spice is an important component of the Indian masala blend and the Yemenite flavor, and also helps in providing a suitable color for mustard.

Its fresh form contains potassium, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene and antioxidants.

Used in cooking mainly in its ground form, although sometimes used in dried roots. The spice powder sold in the markets is usually not pure spice and contains other substances besides the turmeric itself.

Turmeric contains curcumin,

Medical uses

The active ingredient in the turmeric plant is called curcumin. Studies have shown that this substance has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties, and that it can cause apoptosis of human cancer cells. There is little evidence of the benefit of curcumin, due to a small number of clinical studies. A study in the hospital found that curcumin helps in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. "The curcumin concentration in curcumin, 5 percent, is too low for turmeric to be a treatment for the disease.

Turmeric is also a test for acidity, it changes its color to red when it comes into contact with the base and yellowes in contact with acid.
